| Daia High SchoolStream: Second Year Literary Class Time Duration : 02hours Third Term ExamPart One: ReadingRead the text carefully then do the activities:As human beings cannot change the forces which provoke natural catastrophes, they do their best and use their intelligence to find the most efficient solutions to obtain the maximum of protection against their destructive effects. It is naturally scientists and inventors who are expected to realise this task because it needs exceptional skills and patient efforts which often necessitate many years of careful research and intense investigation. The whole operation moves through several steps. At the beginning, it is essential to conduct detailed observations to understand the phenomenon and have an accurate view about its manifestations, its frequency; in addition to the places where it happens. Whether it is earthquakes, volcanoes, cyclones or drought, the same process is adopted. Once enough evidence is collected about them, the second phase starts, and this one consists of thinking about devising practical methods that will provide the exposed populations with sufficient opportunities to reduce the violent effects of the imminent dangers. The authorities are informed about the results of the studies and give recommendations to everyone about the realities which are examined. When the case is connected with earthquakes, the areas that are usually stricken by such disasters are listed and instruments for their detection are installed. Besides, experiments are continuously made in laboratories to find resistant materials and reliable systems to integrate in the new constructions so that these ones will stand the furious actions nature releases at such moments. It is in this way that human beings get progressively armed with appropriate means thanks to which they avoid getting crushed by the mighty forces that shake the planet now and then.
