| Daia High SchoolStream : First Year literary Classes Time duration : 02 hoursSecond term examPart One: ReadingRead the text carefully then do the activities:Carbon Dioxide ( CO2) in the atmosphere helps stop the sun’s heat from escaping back into space. It therefore helps maintain the temperature of the atmosphere. The amount of CO2 is yet increasing rapidly. Rising populations are making this happen. They are doing so by burning more fossil fuels in order to run factories and cars, to cook and to keep warm. To create new farmlands, people are also cutting and burning the largest store of CO2 of all- the forests. If the amount of CO2 rises, more of the sun’s heat will be held. Many scientists compare this to the effect of a greenhouse. The glass of the greenhouse lets in the sun’s heat and does not let it out again. Gases like CO2 act in the same way and they are called greenhouse gases. A greenhouse does a very simple but task: it allows plants to grow when outside temperatures are low. If the same thing happens to the world, however; this greenhouse effect will not be good for people. In 50 years time, a lot of species will have disappeared because of the toxic gases. Most scientists agree that the global warming has been happening. Until recently, though; they did not agree about the cause. For many of them, it was just a natural phenomenon. But in last few years, most scientists have agreed that the greenhouse effect is man-made and is increasing and that the results may be very serious. They now speak about climate changes, rising sea levels and coastal floods. The politicians too have made a start. In December 1997, in Kyoto, Japan, 160 countries agreed to pass legislation to reduce the production of the greenhouse gases. This will not be easy and it seems that we must either learn to use less energy or pay for newer, cleaner technologies. A/ Comprehension and Interpretation1/ Are there any conditional sentences in the text? If yes, how many?2/ Are the following statements true or false?a) Carbon Dioxide maintains the temperature of the atmosphere.b) The greenhouse effect is man-made.c) The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon.d) Netheir scientists nor politicians agree about the real causes of global warming.3/ Answer the following questions according to the text:a) What does CO2 do in the atmosphere?b) What did scientists disagree about until recently?4/ Give a title to the text.5/ Find in the text synonyms to the following words:* rising (§2) * inundations (§5)B/ Text Exploration1/ Find in the text opposites to the following words*ineffective (§3) *in (§3) 2/ Classify these expressions in the table below.Gases, global warming, oil spills, chemical wastes, diseases, acid rains, pesticides, depletion of the ozone layer.3/ Write sentence (b) so that it means the same as sentence (a)a) If the amount of CO2 rises, more of the sun’s heat will be held.b) He said that if ---------------------------------------------------------------------------a) The air we breathe is polluted because factories are burning extremely dangerous gases.b) Factories are burning extremely dangerous gases; ---------------------------------------4/ Classify the following words according to the pronunciation of their final ‘ed’Flooded, warmed, increased, attacked, helped, affected.5/ Put these sentences in the right order so as to know the causes and effects of global warming.a) the polar ice-caps meltb) the earth becomes warmerc) islands and coastal towns are floodedd) the percentage of greenhouse gases risese) the sea-level risesf) pollution increases Part Two: Written ExpressionChoose only one topic:Topic one: In a paragraph of about 10 to 12 lines expose the causes and effects of pollution.Topic two: Renewable energies are the best solution to stop global warming. What are these energies and what are their sources? | |
